PM Shehbaz Sharif Announces Upcoming Relief Package on Electricity Costs

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has revealed that a comprehensive package aimed at reducing electricity costs for the public will be introduced soon.

Presiding over a meeting on the Power Division in Islamabad on Sunday, the prime minister highlighted that ongoing power sector reforms would enable the government to provide significant relief on electricity prices.

He directed officials to counter misinformation regarding the government’s solarisation policy with accurate information, reaffirming that promoting renewable energy remains a key priority. Additionally, he called for an expedited privatisation process for power distribution companies and urged the swift resolution of legal and administrative obstacles hindering the liquidation of generation companies.

The prime minister also emphasized the need for enhanced coordination among the Power Division, Water Resources Division, and Petroleum Division to develop a cohesive energy sector strategy.

Earlier reports suggested that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was expected to announce an electricity tariff reduction of Rs8 per unit on March 23, following approval from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Sources indicated that the Ministry of Finance and the Power Division explored additional measures to further lower electricity rates by Rs2 per unit, finalizing a decision before the official announcement.

The reduction, set to take effect on April 1, 2025, is expected to reflect in consumer bills starting in May. Of the Rs8 per unit decrease, Rs4.73 per unit has been marked as a permanent adjustment.
