Wicked’s Hidden Wizard of Oz Easter Egg You Might Have Missed
Wicked took audiences on a magical journey packed with references to The Wizard of Oz—but did you catch one of the film’s most subtle and clever Easter eggs?
It’s hidden in an unexpected place: Nessarose’s silver slippers. Unlike the iconic ruby-red shoes from the MGM film, these slippers stay true to L. Frank Baum’s original book and the Broadway production of Wicked, where they were silver.
A Clever Nod to Nessa’s Fate
Fans of Wicked and The Wizard of Oz know Nessarose’s ultimate destiny, which will unfold in Wicked: For Good (hitting theaters Nov. 21). As Elphaba’s (Cynthia Erivo) sister, Nessa (Marissa Bode) eventually becomes the Wicked Witch of the East—the unfortunate witch crushed by Dorothy’s house, leading to the infamous shoe theft.
Bode shared with Entertainment Weekly that the film’s costume designers slipped in a brilliant detail related to her character’s fate. “I don’t know if anybody fully caught it, but my silver shoes—the heel is a spiral to signify the tornado,” she revealed.
What’s Next in Wicked: For Good?
Before we see Nessa’s tragic end, Wicked: For Good will explore the aftermath of Elphaba’s fall from grace and how it affects those closest to her.
“You can see all of us taking that in,” Bode said of the first film’s ending. “And what that means to us. It’s just processing in that moment. ‘Is this true? This can’t be true because I know my sister.’ I won’t say much about the second film, but there is time in between to process that, and you get to see our reactions—whether we resent it or not.”
In the meantime, fans can rewatch Wicked on Peacock and keep an eye out for all the hidden Easter eggs they may have overlooked.
